Wimbledon, also known as The Championships, is considered by many as the most prestigious tournament in the world. First held in 1877, the 2011 tournament from June 20 to July 2 marked the 125th anniversary. Played on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, all players must wear white tennis clothes to keep with tradition.
A star was born at the 2011 Championships, as 21-year-old Czech Petra Kvitova won her first Grand Slam title by defeating former champion Maria Sharapova in the final. Martina Navratilova has the tournament record with nine singles titles.
