The groundscrews worked very hard preparing the terre battue before the French Open kicked off.

The French Open - also known as Roland Garros - is the only Grand Slam played on clay courts.

Sam Stosur, a finalist at Roland Garros two years ago, made quick work of Elena Baltacha, 64 60.

Ana Ivanovic made even quicker work of Spanish qualifier Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino, winning, 61 61.

Canadian qualifier Heidi El Tabakh lost out to fellow Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak in two, 75 62.

Argentine teenager Paula Ormaechea was too solid for Venus Williams to win the opening set, 6-4.

But Venus Williams clawed back with a flurry of winners from all wings and scored a 46 61 63 win.

Frenchwomen went 2-1 on Day 1: Mathilde Johansson and Irena Pavlovic won, Caroline Garcia lost.
