Petra Kvitova was appearing in her first North American final at the Rogers Cup.
Li Na was appearing in her third final of the year, having previously been runner-up in Sydney and Rome.
After dropping the first set, Li Na won the first 16 points of the second set.
Having not been beyond a semifinal prior to Montréal, Petra Kvitova was fired up to play for a title.
Petra Kvitova got emotional about her 75 26 63 victory that clinched her eighth career title.
Petra Kvitova was extended to three sets three times during the event, but survived each time.
Their results in Montréal pushed Li Na back into the Top 10 and Petra Kvitova back into the Top 5.
Petra Kvitova was the first Czech to capture the Rogers Cup since Helena Sukova in 1986.
