The first main draw matches at the inaugural BNP Paribas Katowice Open took place Monday at 1pm.
Over on Center Court, Kristyna Pliskova was going up against the No.3 seed, Klara Zakopalova.
Zakopalova came through in the clutch though, closing out the 63-minute first set in a tie-break.
Pliskova stayed even through 2-all second set but Zakopalova ran away with it to win, 76(2) 62.
Simultaneously over on Court 1, Petra Martic was going to three sets against Elina Svitolina.
Svitolina took a lengthy 57-minute first set in a tie-break but Martic went to work from there.
Martic would break early in both the second and third sets and eventually move through, 67(2) 63 62.
Day 1's only doubles saw Raluca Olaru and Valeria Solovyeva beat Magda Linette and Katarzyna Piter.
Annika Beck played the main night match on Center Court against Polish wildcard Marta Domachowska.
Domachowska started both sets well, racing out to 2-0 leads, but ended up falling in straight sets.
Beck ran off 16 of 18 points from 5-3 down in the second set to close Domachowska out, 63 75.
In the second night match on Center, Lourdes Domínguez Lino saved match point to beat Laura Robson.
The night match over on Court 1 saw Karolina Pliskova square off with María-Teresa Torró-Flor.
After dropping the first set, 6-1, Torró-Flor fought back with a 6-3 second set to push it to three.
But Pliskova, who recently won her first WTA title at Kuala Lumpur, rolled to victory, 61 36 60.
