The first final of Week 2 was the singles final at the Apia International Sydney on Friday night.
Angelique Kerber was the favorite in the final, but her opponent had already beaten two Top 10 players.
And Tsvetana Pironkova's blistering backhand carried her to a third straight Top 10 victory.
Pironkova outslugged Kerber in Friday night's final, 64 64, to capture her very first WTA title.
The Bulgarian had never even been in a WTA final, let alone win a WTA title - but that all changed.
By virtue of the victory, Pironkova surged from No.107 to No.57 on the new January 13 rankings.
She also surged to No.1 in the Road To Singapore standings, leading to the WTA Championships.
In their first tournament together, Timea Babos and Lucie Safarova won the doubles title in Sydney.
Over in Hobart, Garbiñe Muguruza was playing her own first WTA final against Klara Zakopalova.
Zakopalova was in her 13th WTA final, but experience didn't prevail this time - Muguruza did, 64 60.
It was the Spaniard's second week back from a six-month ankle injury lay-off - she had surgery too.
Monica Niculescu and Zakopalova won the doubles title - their second of the year after Shenzhen.
