The popularity of tennis in China has exploded in the 21st century, an example of that being it hosting six WTA tournaments in 2014. One of those is the Guangzhou International Women's Open, where at its inaugural staging in 2004, Li Na became the first Chinese WTA singles titlist.

Other competitors to have graced the Guangzhou International Tennis Center's courts include 2008 champion Vera Zvonareva and former World No.1s Jelena Jankovic and Dinara Safina.

Known for its foreign trade and business doings, Guangzhou is southern China's largest city. It is the capital of the Guangdong province - the People's Republic of China, and is 75 miles from Hong Kong.
