Farum Arena, just north of Copenhagen, was built in 2000 for theater, concerts, conferences and handball. Tennis was added to that list in 2010 with the inaugural staging of the first WTA event on Danish soil as Danish native Caroline Wozniacki was rising to superstardom.
"We have a wonderful collaboration with e-Boks, our first WTA partner. Without e-Boks and Caroline Wozniacki, there would had been no basis for a WTA tournament in Denmark," said Steen Thomsen, chairman of Nordic Sports Group, which runs the e-Boks Open.
Wozniacki thrilled fans by winning the event's first two editions and being runner-up in its third.
"This tournament means a lot to me," said Wozniacki, who was born and raised less than 90 miles away in Odense. "It's great to play in front of my Danish fans who have been following me my whole career. It's just amazing to be able to play in front of the home crowd."
