As the European clay court season approaches its climax, many of the WTA's leading players participate in the Brussels Open. Launched in 2011, the Premier tournament is staged one week prior to the start of the French Open at the Primrose Royal Tennis Club in the north of the Belgian capital.
The Brussels Open is currently Belgium's only WTA stop-off on the tennis calendar, although in the past the country played host to WTA tournaments in Antwerp, Hasselt and Liège.
Despite having a population of just 11 million, Belgium has been a hotbed of tennis talent over the last few decades, producing names such as Kim Clijsters and Brussels' most famous daughter, Justine Henin, both former World No.1s. Another successful product of the Royal Belgian Tennis Federation was former Top 10 player Dominique Monami, who is now the Brussels Open's Tournament Director.
