The Copa Bionaire started as a $25,000 ITF Women's Circuit stop in 2007. After undergoing several prize money increases, it was upgraded to one of the WTA's 125K Series events starting with the 2013 edition.

Spain's Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino was victorious at the first staging as a WTA 125K Series event, besting Colombia's Catalina Castaño in the final.

The event is played at Club Campestre de Cali, a modern and spacious country club founded in 1930. Featuring 31 clay courts, in addition to a five-star hotel, golf course, gymnasium, pool and horseback riding, it is considered one of South America's best tennis facilities. Located in southwest Colombia, Cali is the third-largest city in the country and has a fast-growing economy propelled by the new Free Trade Agreement with the US.

Launched in late 2012, the WTA 125K Series sits between the WTA's International Series and ITF Women's Circuit events.
