After a 64 year absence, tennis returned to the Olympics as a full medal sport in 1988, and has since become one of the most sought after titles in the professional game.
Germany's Steffi Graf won gold in 1988, and went on to achieve the first Golden Slam (securing all four majors and the Olympics the same season); since then the gold has gone to Americans Jennifer Capriati (1992), Lindsay Davenport (1996) and Venus Williams (2000), Belgian Justine Henin (2004), Russian Elena Dementieva (2008) and American Serena Williams (2012).
At the most recent Olympics in 2012, at the All-England Club in London, Serena Williams completed a career Golden Slam by capturing the singles title. She also teamed up with sister Venus for their third gold medal in doubles after 2000 and 2008. In the first Olympic mixed doubles competition, Belarusians Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi were victorious.
