Part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series, the tournament rotates each year between Toronto and Montréal, with the ATP staging its version of the event the same week in the alternate city. Three times it has been named the WTA's Premier Tournament Of The Year - in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
The event has been won by a plethora of all-time greats, with Chris Evert and Monica Seles leading the way with four titles each. Seles has an especially memorable history, the first of her four straight triumphs coming in 1995 in Toronto - her first tournament back after a two-year, three-month absence from the WTA.
