Caroline Wozniacki (DEN #8) vs. Taylor Townsend (USA #99)
Head-to-head: Wozniacki leads 1-0
Caroline Wozniacki's return to form was one of the feel-good stories of last summer, culminating in a run to the final of the US Open. Placed in a tricky section of the draw, the Dane's campaign starts with a potentially tricky encounter against the green but gifted Taylor Townsend.
Three years ago, Townsend was crowned junior champion in Melbourne, and in her brief senior career has already showed that she has the ability to make a successful transition to the professional ranks.
The two have already met once this season, Wozniacki holding off a late revival to triumph in straight sets in Auckland.
Sloane Stephens (USA #32) vs. Victoria Azarenka (BLR #44)
Head-to-head: Azarenka leads 2-0
For the third year in succession, Victoria Azarenka and Sloane Stephens will lock horns in Melbourne. However, unlike 2013 (semifinals) and 2014 (fourth round), both players' recent struggles mean that this encounter takes place at an unusually early juncture.
Now fully recovered after the foot and knee injuries that blighted her in 2014, Azarenka has been making all the right noises in the build-up to the year's first major, which she won in 2012 and 2013.
Nevertheless, she remains short on that vital match practice, having lost to Karolina Pliskova early on in Brisbane, leaving the outcome on Hisense intriguingly open.
Stat to watch: The last Grand Slam Azarenka was unseeded at before this one was the 2007 US Open.
