- Rain washed out the bulk of play on Monday at the Rogers Cup, but one night session match was able to finish. Sabine Lisicki beat Venus Williams, 6-0, 6-3, to make the second round. "Just a tough draw and bad luck," Venus said.
"I didn't really realize how brave I was until I came home and everyone in my family and my friends, they told me that if they got told the same thing the day before they had to play a match, they wouldn't have been able to finish, because that's like the biggest emotional blow you can hear. To me, I was just thinking that I needed to keep winning so I didn't go home. For me, to keep playing was easier."

"In tennis, one week you're [ranked] seven, the next week you're 20," she said. "I said before, the good moments go so quickly and the bad ones are so slow. One month ago I was in the Wimbledon final but it seems like two years ago. It's gone so fast.
"Of course I'm going to be more motivated and have great memories but now I have to think of the US Open Series and try to keep the same level."
