Belinda Bencic's star didn't simply rise in August; it soared.
"Obviously it's very big boost for your confidence," the teenaged Swiss said after capturing her second WTA title in Toronto. "Now I actually feel like I belong here, and that I can be really one of the top players.
"It's an amazing feeling."
It was an entire week of amazing feelings for Bencic, who began the week unseeded and barreled past a barrage of former No.1s and Grand Slam finalists. Eliminating Eugenie Bouchard and Sabine Lisicki in three sets, she also took out Top 5 seeds in Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic in two. But all of that paled in comparison with the upset of the year; up against reigning World No.1 Serena Williams, Bencic handed the 21-time Grand Slam champion her second loss of the season in a thrilling encounter punctuated by a fireworks display.
"I was very overwhelmed from the situation on the court, but I'm just so happy the forehand landed in and she couldn't reach it anymore," she said in that night's press conference. "It was an incredible feeling. I have no words."
Outlasting World No.3 Simona Halep in the final, Bencic took two more big wins the very next week - over Angelique Kerber and Flavia Pennetta - before a forearm injury curtailed her progress at the Western & Southern Open. Seeded No.12 at the US Open, Bencic could face Williams again in the quarterfinals, as the latter seeks to clinch the Calendar Year Grand Slam.
For those reasons you've voted her August's WTA Rising Star Of The Month.
