April 2015 WTA Player Of The Month Finalists
Angelique Kerber: Angelique Kerber came into April followed by a trail of disappointing results - the 27-year-old German had won just three of her last 11 matches. All of that changed when she reached the green clay of Charleston. She went on to win her first WTA clay title of her career at the Family Circle Cup, defeating her countrywoman Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals before downing American WTA Rising Star Madison Keys in a tough three set final 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Kerber joined the German Fed Cup team in Russia for the World Group semifinal. She won against Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in comprehensive straight sets, salvaging a point for her country, but would not be enough to push them into the Fed Cup final. Kerber would then head to Stuttgart looking to extend her clay win streak. After a comfortable win over lucky loser Alexa Glatch, Kerber would square off against three-time defending champion Maria Sharapova in the round of 16. The German would edge Sharapova 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. She then went on to win the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title, gritting out a thrilling 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory against Caroline Wozniacki.
Caroline Wozniacki: Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki opened the month by traveling to Montenegro to represent her country at the Fed Cup. She won against Greece's Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-0 to win a point for Denmark in the Fed Cup Group 3 Play-offs. Wozniacki went on to the red clay of Stuttgart, where she reached her third final of year at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Along the way, she had to face two players on a streak: Wozniacki defeated Spain's Carla Suárez Navarro 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and World No.2 Simona Halep, whom she beat 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in the semifinals. She lost in the final to eventual champion, Angelique Kerber in a close three setter. Follow Stuttgart, Wozniacki jumped to No.6 on the Road to Singapore leaderboard.
Elina Svitolina: Elina Svitolina began her April at the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogotá, Colombia as the top seed. She defeated her first three opponents in straight sets and only lost a combined 15 games on her way to the semifinals, where she fell to eventual champion Teliana Pereira. Her next event was Marrakech, for the GP SAR La Princesse Lalia Mereyem, where she was the fourth seed. After defeating fellow WTA Rising Stars Donna Vekic and Christina McHale in straight sets, she was pushed to three sets by Karin Knapp in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Ukrainian routed fellow WTA Rising Star of the Month finalist and Katowice champion Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-0, 6-3. Facing her fourth WTA Rising Star in five matches, Svitolina defeated Timea Babos 7-5, 7-6(3) to capture her third career WTA title. Following Marrakech, Svitolina rose to a career-high ranking of World No.21.
