April 2015 WTA Rising Star Of The Month Finalists:
Karolina Pliskova: Karolina Pliskova's consistent effort pays off in her third consecutive WTA Rising Star of the Month nomination. The 23-year-old only played one tournament in April, but won it. In her hometown of Prague, Pliskova entered the J&T Banka Prague Open, as the top seed. Pliskova fought hard, playing three back-to-back three-set matches to reach the final, where she defeated countrywoman Lucie Hradecka 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to win her first WTA title of 2015. The Czech also added more points to her Road to Singapore leaderboard standings, where she stands at No.4, the highest ranked WTA Rising Star.
Elina Svitolina: Svitolina began her April at the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogotá, Colombia as the top seed. She defeated her first three opponents in straight sets and only lost a combined 15 games on her way to the semifinals, where she fell to eventual champion Teliana Pereira. Her next event was in Marrakech for the GP SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem, where she was the fourth seed. After defeating fellow WTA Rising Stars Donna Vekic and Christina McHale in straight sets, she was pushed to three sets by Karin Knapp in the quarterfinals . In the semifinals, the Ukrainian routed fellow WTA Rising Star of the Month finalist and Katowice champion Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-0, 6-3. Facing her fourth WTA Rising Star in five matches, Svitolina defeated Timea Babos 7-5, 7-6(3) to capture her third career WTA title. Following Marrakech, Svitolina rose to a career-high ranking of World No.21.
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova: The 20-year-old kicked off the month in the best way possible - winning her first career WTA title at the Katowice Open. Schmiedlova doled out upset after upset on her way to the title, defeating No.2-seeded Alizé Cornet 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and No.3-seeded Camila Giorgi 6-4, 6-3 in the final. Schmiedlova hasn't let up after winning her first title, though - she was crucial in Slovakia's 4-0 Fed Cup victory over Sweden. She won both of her singles matches, defeating Rebecca Peterson and Ellen Allgurin in straight sets, before teaming up with doubles partner Jana Cepelova to win against Susanne Celik and Peterson. She continued on to Marrakech, where the Slovak made a run to the semifinals, where she lost to eventual champion Elina Svitolina. Schmiedlova's month of hard work has certainly paid off - she's reached a career-high ranking of No.43, making her Slovakia's No.2.
