March 2015 WTA Player Of The Month Finalists
Serena Williams: World No.1 Serena Williams had a month she will never forget, starting with her return to Indian Wells for the first time since 2001. It was an emotional return for Serena to the desert, but after her first match she regained her No.1 form. The two-time Indian Wells champion advanced to the semifinals where she was set to face Simona Halep, but unfortunately had to withdraw with a knee injury. Williams entered Miami on a 12-match win streak in Key Biscayne, but was unsure how her knee would hold up this year. The American did not drop a set en route to the quarterfinals where she would edge Sabine Lisicki in three sets, before then battling past Simona Halep in the semifinals. In the final Williams stormed past Carla Suárez Navarro, dropping just two games to capture her eighth Miami Open title and third straight. Following Miami, Williams shot back to No.1 on the Road To Singapore leaderboard.
Simona Halep: Halep went 9-1 in March and played some of the best tennis in her career. Halep battled her way into the BNP Paribas Open final, winning three-setters over Daria Gavrilova, Varvara Lepchenko and Carla Suárez Navarro. After receiving a walkover against Serena Williams in the semifinals, Halep entered the final against 2010 champion Jelena Jankovic. After dropping the first set, Halep would battle back again and edge Jankovic to capture the title. It was already Halep's third title of 2015, but her first career WTA Premier Mandatory title. Halep entered Miami looking to become the first player since 2005 to complete the Indian Wells-Miami double, but once again ran into Serena Williams in the semifinals. This time the World No.1 was fit and battled past Halep, winning 7-5 in the third set.
Carla Suárez Navarro: Suárez Navarro had a brilliant March. In Indian Wells the Spanish No.1 defeated Monica Puig, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Heather Watson. Suárez Navarro would fall in the quarterfinals, but not before taking World No.3 Simona Halep to three sets. It was a brutal draw in Miami for Suárez Navarro, but she fought her way past Alizé Cornet, Agnieszka Radwanska, Venus Williams, Andrea Petkovic and into her first WTA Premier Mandatory final. It wasn't the final she was hoping for, losing to World No.1 Serena Williams, 6-2, 6-0, but it was a month Suárez Navarro will be very proud of. So the only two players to beat Suárez Navarro in March: her fellow WTA March Player of the Month finalists. Following Miami Suárez Navarro made her Top 10 debut in the rankings and jumped to No.4 on the Road To Singapore leaderboard.
