2014 WTA Doubles Team of the Year Finalists
Sara Errani/Roberta Vinci: Errani and Vinci kicked off 2014 with a runner-up finish in Sydney before going one better down the coast in Melbourne, where they withstood a number of stiff tests to defend their Australian Open crown. While they were unable to cap a magnificent clay court campaign with a second French Open crown, this disappointment was short lived, as they completed their major collection a few weeks later at Wimbledon.
Hsieh Su-Wei/Peng Shuai: After electing against entering an Australian Open tune-up event together, Hsieh and Peng fell early at Melbourne Park, suffering a surprise exit to Shahar Peer and Sílvia Soler-Espinosa. They bounced back admirably from this early setback, however, winning their next two tournaments, in Doha and Indian Wells, to stretch their remarkable finals winning streak to 11. In Paris, they made this 12, negotiating a treacherous draw before dethroning clay court queens Errani and Vinci in a flawless final display.
Ekaterina Makarova/Elena Vesnina: While Makarova and Vesnina struggled to recreate the consistency of previous years, a couple of exceptional performances at the majors ensured it was a campaign to remember. They started with a bang, battling through a tricky draw to reach the Australian Open final where they were narrowly beaten by Errani and Vinci. Their next final came in Miami, where they were pipped to the prize by Martina Hingis and Sabine Lisicki on a match tie-break. However, following an up and down summer, they arrived in New York on a mission, defeating Hingis and Flavia Pennetta to lift their second major.
Cara Black/Sania Mirza: After a brilliant start to their partnership, Black and Mirza found silverware slightly harder to come by in their second season. However, it was not for a lack of trying. Regular forays to the business end of the big events brought them titles in Oeiras and Tokyo, and runner-up trophies from their visits to Indian Wells, Stuttgart, Montréal and Beijing. They saved their best until last, though, saving match points en route to the trophy at the WTA Finals.
