2014 WTA Newcomer Of The Year Finalists

Belinda Bencic: While Bencic has been earmarked for stardom for quite some time, few could have predicted the impact she would make in 2014. Having started the year outside the Top 200, the Swiss bounded up the rankings, propelled by a number of reputation-enhancing showings, including a semifinal in Charleston and a runner-up finish in Tianjin. However, it was her performance in New York that really captured the tennis public's imagination, defeating a succession of higher-ranked players on her way to the quarterfinals.

Zarina DiyasA mightily impressive summer, bookmarked by credible showings at Wimbledon and the US Open, has seen Diyas quietly make her way up the rankings. The Kazakh is now on the verge of the Top 30 and judging by the run to the final at her last event of the year, in Osaka, success and silverware is surely on the cards for 2015.

Kurumi Nara: In March, Nara marked her graduation into tennis' top tier with a maiden WTA title, in Rio de Janeiro. It was all a far cry from 12 months earlier, when Nara was preparing to do the rounds on the minor league circuit, stopping off in such tennis meccas as Innisbrook, Osprey and Pelham. Now the Japanese No.1, who also finished runner up in Washington DC, is firmly ensconced in the Top 50 and threatening to go higher.

Shelby Rogers: After passing up the opportunity to go to college, Rogers spent her late teens and early 20s plying her trade at some of tennis' less-salubrious locations. However, a summer surge, highlighted by a surprise runner-up finish in Bad Gastein, sent the young American shooting up the rankings. She continued her impressive run of results through the remainder of the season, shining particularly brightly during deep runs in Montréal and Québec City.
