September 2014 WTA Player Of The Month Finalists

Maria Sharapova: Sharapova started October in unfamiliar fashion. In just the third round of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open she was upset by qualifier Timea Bacsinszky. The former World No.1 would head into the China Open looking to rebound and did just that. Sharapova stormed though the field not dropping a set en route to the final. There she battled past Petra Kvitova in a close three-setter. It was Sharapova's first Beijing title and fourth of 2014, the most WTA titles she has won in a season since 2006. Additionally it was Sharapova's second Premier Mandatory title of the year after winning Madrid in May. Following Beijing Sharapova returned to World No.2.

Petra Kvitova: Kvitova had one of the best months of her professional career. First she captured the inaugural Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in impressive fashion, defeating Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets in the final. With the Wuhan title, Kvitova became the fourth player to qualify for BNP Paribas WTA Finals SIngapore presented by SC Global. The Wimbledon champion then carried her momentum into the China Open where she would reach the final, her third final in her last four tournaments. Kvitova would fall in three sets to Maria Sharapova, but compiled an impressive 8-1 record in October.

Ana Ivanovic: Ivanovic continued her return to the top of the game with an incredible run to the Toray Pan Pacific Open title. In Tokyo Ivanovic defeated four straight Top 25 players, Victoria Azarenka, Lucie Safarova, Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki. It was Ivanovic's fourth WTA title of 2014 and second Premier crown. The next week Ivanovic would be forced to retire in her opening match of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open. The former World No.1 would quickly rebound by making the semifinals of the China Open, losing to eventual champion Maria Sharapova.
