No.2 seed Mihaela Buzarnescu plays Tamara Zidansek in a clash of two of the fastest-rising players this year - both sitting at career high rankings this week. The Romanian's meteoric rise from No.374 last June to her present No.25 has been one of the major WTA storylines of 2018, while Zidansek has quietly forged from No.205 in February to No.93 this week. Buzarnescu leads the head-to-head 2-0, with both victories coming on indoor carpet: in the quarterfinals of the ITF $25,000 event in Zawada in 2015, and in the final of the ITF $60,000 tournament in Toyota  at the end of last year.

Two of the three Romanians to have made the second round are in action today. Alongside Buzarnescu is Irina Bara, who won her first WTA main draw match at the third attempt on Monday. The 23-year-old takes on No.8 seed Polona Hercog for a spot in her maiden quarterfinal - having defeated the Slovenian in their only previous meeting, in the second round of the ITF $60,000 event in Dunakeszi last August.

No.7 seed Pauline Parmentier and Wang Yafan have played twice, both this year, and split meetings. The Chinese player took their second-round encounter indoors in Taipei City 6-3, 6-3, but the Frenchwoman got her revenge at home on clay in the first round of Strasbourg 6-4, 7-6(8).

No.1 seed Anastasija Sevastova is one of only two previous finalists remaining in the draw (alongside 2015 champion Anna Karolina Schmiedlova). The Latvian reached the final in 2016, where she lost 6-0, 6-0 to Simona Halep.
