MIAMI, FL, USA - No.3 seed Garbiñe Muguruza became the first player through to the third round at the Miami Open due to unfortunate circumstances on Wednesday, as American teenager Amanda Anisimova was forced to withdraw due to a right foot injury.
The 16-year-old wildcard defeated China's Wang Qiang in the first round on Tuesday, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, but went over on her ankle in the course of play during the match. Anisimova completed the win after an in-match medical timeout, but the injury will prevent her from taking the court in the third round.
The reigning junior US Open champion was awarded a wildcard to the second Premier Mandatory event of the year after a standout showing in Indian Wells, where she upset both Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Petra Kvitova en route to the fourth round.
After an earlier than expected exit at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where she was upset in the second round by American qualifier Sachia Vickery, Muguruza will have to wait a little longer to get back on court in the Sunshine Swing.
She will next face the winner of the match No.25 seed Barbora Strycova and Christina McHale.
"I always feel like I'm in my second home here [in Miami]. It was the tournament where people got to know me a little bit," Muguruza said before the tournament began.
"I'm still trying to find my rhythm. I've had a few good matches and a few that haven't gone my way. I've trained hard to get prepared [here]."
