Serena Williams is an eight-time Miami champion, with her most recent victory coming in 2015.

She won the tournament three years in succession.

In 2016, Azarenka became the third player to win Indian Wells and Miami in the same year, following Stefanie Graf (1994, 1996) and Kim Clijsters (2005); Osaka begins her campaign to emulate that feat against Williams.

Azarenka is also a three-time Miami champion, with her first win coming in 2009. She followed that up with victories in 2011 and 2016.

Bellis and Azarenka have met only once before - last year, at Wimbledon, when the Belarusian won in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Bacsinszky has a 4-1 head-to-head record against Makarova - but they have not faced each other since Madrid in 2016.

Mattek-Sands entered the tournament on a wildcard last year, and reached the Round of 16.

Puig and Stosur played each other most recently at the Australian Open - when the Olympic gold medalist emerged victorious, 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4.
