With Thursday's singles play in Zhengzhou washed out due to rain, five quarterfinal spots are still at stake. By the end of play on Friday, all four semifinalists will be decided.
No. 6 seed Sofia Kenin, No. 7 seed Petra Martic and unseeded Kristina Mladenovic already booked their places in the quarterfinals by virtue of second round wins on Wednesday. The trio defeated another trio of French players to advance, in Alizé Cornet, Fiona Ferro and No. 8 seed Caroline Garcia, respectively.
No. 3 seed Kiki Bertens kicks off her campaign against Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic, whom she defeated to win the KEB Hana Bank Korea Open last year.
No. 4 seed Aryna Sabalenka, who has won two of her three career titles in China, takes on former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko for the first time.
Zheng Saisai, the last Chinese player left in the draw, will face Alison Riske for a spot in the quarterfinals, with Riske having saved a match point to beat three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber in the first round.
