This is the fourth year the Jiangxi Open has been a WTA International event. There has been a Chinese singles champion in each of the first three stagings -- Duan Yingying in 2016, Peng Shuai in 2017, and Wang Qiang last year.
Magda Linette reached the Nanchang semifinals last season before falling to Wang Qiang. The Polish No.1 picked up her first-ever WTA singles title three weeks ago at the NYJTL Bronx Open. No.3 seed Linette will face qualifier Giuliana Olmos in their first meeting.
Lara Arruabarrena has a slim 3-2 lead on Monica Niculescu in their head-to-head. One of their encounters was in a WTA singles final, where Arruabarrena beat Niculescu in three sets to win the title at Seoul in 2016. However, Niculescu has won their only clash this season, in three sets in Miami.
Former World No.5 and 2012 Roland Garros runner-up Sara Errani meets Dalila Jakupovic in their first meeting. Errani, currently ranked World No.245, will play her first match since a first-round loss at the WTA event in Palermo, nearly two months ago.
