NEW YORK, USA - Australia's Ashleigh Barty is set to return to the No.1 spot after the US Open.
Heading into the US Open, four women had a chance to leave New York with the No.1 ranking: current No.1 Naomi Osaka, No.2 Barty, No.3 Karolina Pliskova, and No.4 Simona Halep. With Halep's loss in the second round and Pliskova and Osaka losing in the Round of 16, Roland Garros and Miami Open champion Barty will return to the top spot when the rankings are updated on Monday.
Barty first took over the No.1 ranking after winning her third title of the season at Birmingham. The 23-year-old held the top spot for 6 weeks before being overtaken by Osaka after Toronto.
Additional ranking notes:
- Pliskova will rise to No.2 unless Elina Svitolina, who advanced to her second consecutive Slam semifinal, wins the title.
- By advancing to her first US Open semifinal, No.5 Svitolina will rise to No.3. If she wins the title she will rise to a career-high No.2.
- Bianca Andreescu can secure her Top 10 debut by advancing to the semifinal, provided Vekic does not win the title or Serena Williams does not reach the final.
- Serena Willams will return to the Top 10 after advancing to the semifinals.
- After advancing to the quarterfinals, No.12 Belinda Bencic has a chance to return to the Top 10 depending on other results. The 22-year-old can guarantee her return to the Top 10 by advancing to her first major semifinal.
- Sloane Stephens will drop out of the Top 10 after the US Open.
- Donna Vekic will rise to a career-high ranking of No.22 by advancing to her first major quarterfinal. She can make her Top 20 debut if she advances to the semifinal.
- Elise Mertens will rise to No.24 by advancing to the quarterfinals and could break the Top 20 by advancing to the semifinals.
- Taylor Townsend will climb into the Top 85 by reaching the Round of 16.
- With her big run to the Round of 16, 27-year-old Kristie Ahn has ensured her Top 100 debut.
