Both semifinals pair a seeded player against an unseeded player whom they have never beaten. No.1 seed Wang Qiang is 0-2 against Camila Giorgi, having lost to the Italian twice in 2017 - 6-0, 6-2 in the Shenzhen quarterfinals and 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of Prague.
No.5 seed Katerina Siniakova is also 0-2 against qualifier Magda Linette. Their first meeting was in the quarterfinals of an ITF $10k event in Prague in 2012 - a 16-year-old Siniakova's second ever pro event - which the Pole won 6-2, 6-4 en route to the title. Five years later, the pair would meet again in the second round of Wuhan in 2017, with Linette again winning 6-1, 6-2.
Wang Qiang is competing in her first WTA semifinal outside Asia, and first semifinal of 2019. The Chinese No.1 reached her first four finals within the space of five months in 2018, capturing titles in Nanchang and Guangzhou and coming runner-up in Hong Kong and Zhuhai, but prior to this week only had two quarterfinal runs under her belt this season, in Miami and Prague.
Magda Linette is seeking to make her first final since Tokyo 2015. The Pole is 1-4 in WTA semifinals across her career, having lost in the last four of Baku 2013, Kuala Lumpur 2017, Nanchang 2018 and Hua Hin 2019. Meanwhile, Katerina Siniakova is going for her sixth career final, and first since Shenzhen 2018.
Camila Giorgi is the only Bronx semifinalist with a final appearance already under her belt this season - in Washington three weeks ago, her first on outdoor hard courts. The Italian will bid for her eighth career final today. A win over Wang Qiang would mark her 26th career Top 20 win, and first since upsetting Caroline Wozniacki in the second round of Tokyo last year.
None of the Bronx semifinalists started the week with a positive win-loss record at WTA main draw level this season: Wang Qiang was 13-13, Camila Giorgi was 7-9, Katerina Siniakova was 13-21 and Magda Linette was 9-13. Including qualifying, 125K, ITF and Fed Cup matches, only Wang came into the tournament with a winning record (16-14).
