Less than two months after her WTA World No.1 spot was taken from her by Ashleigh Barty, two-time major winner Naomi Osaka is back on top of the world.

The US and Australian Open champion has regained the summit thanks to a run to the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup, where Barty suffered a round-of-32 defeat to the in-form Sofia Kenin.

That opened the door for either Osaka or Karolina Pliskova to climb to the summit, but as the Czech fell in the last eight to Bianca Andreescu, it confirmed that the Japanese player had reclaimed a position that she had vacated for a matter of mere weeks.

Andreescu, meanwhile, was busy breaking fresh ground for herself as she became the first Canadian woman to win the modern Rogers Cup, benefitting as Serena Williams was forced to retire only four games into the final.

On her return from a shoulder injury, the 19-year-old obliterated any doubts surrounding her fitness and sharpness levels as she recorded a string of impressive three-set results. Eugenie Bouchard, Daria Kasatkina, Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova were all dismissed over the distance before a more straightforward 6-4, 7-6(5) semifinal win over Kenin.

Consequently, she has climbed from WTA World No.27 up to No.14, the first time she has broken into the Top 20.

Here are the other notable movers in the WTA Rankings for the week beginning August 12, 2019.

Serena Williams (+2, No.10 to No.8): Although the week ended with disappointment for Serena, her trip to Toronto was full of promise as she defeated Osaka for the first time, doing so in straight sets, before having to retire injured from the final.

Sofia Kenin (+7, No.29 to No.22): The 20-year-old American has moved into the Top 25 for the first time courtesy of her run to the semifinals of Toronto, which was highlighted by a three-set win over erstwhile WTA World No.1 Ashleigh Barty, as well as a success over No.6 seed Elina Svitolina. With Amanda Anisimova currently WTA World No.24, this is the first time there have been two Americans in the Top 25 aged 20 and under since June 11, 2001, when Serena and Venus Williams were WTA World No.5 and WTA World No.2 respectively.

Ekaterina Alexandrova (+5, No.48 to No.43): Though the Russian was stopped by Serena, she navigated qualifying then won two main draw matches against Misaki Doi and Zhang Shuai at the Rogers Cup. The 24-year-old is at a new career high.

Marie Bouzkova (+38, No.91 to No.53): The big climber of the Top 100 this week, Bouzkova made it all the way to the semifinals in Toronto before losing to Serena after claiming the opening set. Among her victims in Canada were Grand Slam champions Sloane Stephens, Jelena Ostapenko and Simona Halep.

Iga Swiatek (+10, No.55 to No.45): The teenager continues to make strides up the rankings after reaching the round of 16 in Toronto. Having qualified, she defeated No.15 seed Caroline Wozniacki over three sets before falling to Osaka.

Jelena Ostapenko (+7, No.82 to No.75): After a difficult start to 2019, the Latvian is starting to show some signs of coming back to form. Wins over Caroline Garcia and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Canada have seen her leap seven spots on the ranking.

Francesca Di Lorenzo (+24, No.152 to No.128): Qualified for the Rogers Cup win fine wins over higher-ranked players Astra Sharma and Ons Jabeur then set about shocking Petra Martic in the main draw. Kiki Bertens proved too strong for the 22-year-old American, who has hit a new career-best ranking.

Svetlana Kuznetsova (+45, No.198 to No.153): The 34-year-old proved that she is still a force to be reckoned with in Toronto. As a wildcard, she overcame Wang Xiyu and Donna Vekic before falling to Simona Halep in the last 16.

Lesley Kerkhove (+21, No.184 to No.163): A run to the final of an ITF event in Chiswick, GB, has allowed the Dutchwoman to move strongly into the Top 200.
