Defending Mutua Madrid Open champion Petra Kvitova won her only previous meeting with Sofia Kenin, in three sets at the Miami Open last season.
Kvitova has won the Mutua Madrid Open three times, and all three of the women she beat in those finals -- Victoria Azarenka (2011), Svetlana Kuznetsova (2015), and Kiki Bertens (last year) -- will also played first-round matches on Court Manolo Santana on Saturday.
Azarenka is a two-time Mutua Madrid Open finalist, in back-to-back editions in 2011 and 2012. Azarenka has defeated Daria Kasatkina in their only prior encounter, at a Fed Cup tie in 2016.
Aryna Sabalenka has won her only previous match with 2015 Mutua Madrid Open finalist Kuznetsova. Sabalenka defeated Kuznetsova in straight sets in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last year.
Bertens fell to Katerina Siniakova in their only prior encounter. Siniakova upset Bertens in straight sets in Beijing last year.
Ashleigh Barty takes a 2-1 head-to-head lead into her match with fellow Australian Daria Gavrilova. They have not played since the Sydney semifinals in January of 2018, where Barty triumphed in three sets.
Since the event's inception in 2009, six different players have won the singles title at Madrid. Simona Halep (2016-17), Kvitova (2011, 2015, 2018), and Serena Williams (2012-13) are the multiple winners. Dinara Safina (2009), Aravane Rezai (2010), and Maria Sharapova (2014) are the other Mutua Madrid Open champions. Kvitova and Halep are the only former champions in this year's draw.
