MATCH POINTS

Victoria Azarenka has won her only previous meeting with Garbiñe Muguruza, a 7-6(6), 7-6(4) tussle in the round of 16 at the 2016 Miami Open. Both players are into their first final of the season.

After defeating Muguruza in that match, Azarenka went on to win that title and complete the 'Sunshine Double' for that year, after winning the 2016 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells two weeks prior. That is Azarenka's most recent title to date -- and, indeed, Sunday's Abierto GNP Seguros final is Azarenka's first WTA singles final since then.

Azarenka is making her Abierto GNP Seguros debut. Her semifinal win over World No.5 Angelique Kerber is her first Top 5 victory since she beat two Top 5 players en route to the 2016 Miami Open title -- Muguruza and Kerber.

Defending champion Muguruza is up to nine straight wins in Monterrey. The Spaniard claimed the title last year over Timea Babos for her only singles title of 2018. The Spaniard is hoping to become the first player to defend the Monterrey title since Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova went back-to-back in 2010 and 2011.

The first 14 events of the 2019 season have all been won by different players - the first time this has ever happened. The record will continue to be extended to 16 on Sunday, as both the Abierto GNP Seguros as well as the Volvo Car Open in Charleston will be claimed by players who have yet to win a title this season.

Maria Sanchez is back in the Monterrey doubles final after finishing as runner-up in 2016, when she paired with Petra Martic but lost to Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Parra Santonja.

Asia Muhammad has three WTA doubles titles to her credit. Sanchez, Monique Adamczak, and Jessica Moore have each won two WTA doubles titles.
