This week marks Hsieh Su-Wei's fourth semifinal in her past six tournaments, stretching back to Hiroshima last September, where the Chinese Taipei No.1 captured her third career title. It is also Hsieh's second consecutive run to the Auckland semifinals.
18-year-old Bianca Andreescu, the conqueror of both Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams, is playing just her fourth WTA-level main draw. Her first, after qualifying for Wimbledon 2017, was also her Slam debut; in her second, at Washington that year, Andreescu defeated Kristina Mladenovic to make her maiden quarterfinal.
This week is the one-year anniversary of Julia Goerges' first meeting with Viktoria Kuzmova - also in Auckland, in the second round. The pair would go on to play two further times in 2018, with the German winning all three matches (on outdoor hard courts in Auckland, clay in Moscow and indoor hard courts in Luxembourg) in straight sets.
Bianca Andreescu is bidding to become the first qualifier to reach the Auckland final since Marion Maruska in 1997. Maruska went on to beat Judith Wiesner in an all-Austrian final.
20-year-old Viktoria Kuzmova is playing her third WTA Tour semifinal following Budapest and 's-Hertogenbosch last year, and is seeking to make her maiden final.
