BRONX, NY, USA - With the first day of main draw play the NYJTL Bronx Open delayed heavily by thunderstorms in the hot New York City summer, Alizé Cornet and Bernarda Pera

Prior to the afternoon summer storm, Pera surrendered just two games to see off Russian Veronika Kudermetova, 6-0, 6-2, while Cornet bounced back after the delay to defeat Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova, 6-4, 6-2.

Pera's victory reversed a result from just six days ago, as she was defeated by Kudermetova in straight sets in the first round of the Western & Southern Open, 6-3, 6-2.

"I felt pretty good and I think I played an excellent match, almost perfect," Pera said after the match.

"I didn't change much [from Cincinnati]. Tennis can change so quickly: one day you're playing good and the other one, you're not doing so great. She's a great player so I'm happy with this win."

The other matches to finish on Sunday saw six woman book their spots in the main draw via qualifying, with five of the matches going the distance.

The most dramatic victory of the afternoon belong to top qualifying seed Jil Teichmann, who saved two match points in the second set and rallied from 5-2 down in the decider to beat No.10 seed Laura Siegemund, 0-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(5).

China's Zhu Lin, No. 2 seed Fiona Ferro and No.5 seed Kaia Kanepi all rallied from a set down to advance to the main draw, against No.3 seed Viktorija Golubic, Elizabeth Mandlik and Nadiia Kichenok, respectively.

Eighteen-year-old Mandlik, the daughter of WTA Hall of Famer Hana Mandlikova, twice led by a break in the final set before World No.71 Ferro rallied to win, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Rounding out the qualifiers were Anastasia Potapova and Magda Linette, as the former needed three sets to beat American Francesca Di Lorenzo, and the latter beat Anna Blinkova in two tiebreaks.
