PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Mona Barthel is the first player through to the semifinals of the J&T Banka Prague Open, downing Camila Giorgi in straight sets, 7-6(0), 7-6(6).

In a tight tussle, the German was in impressive form in the first-set tiebreak, taking all seven points.

Her Italian opponent made the brighter start in the second set, taking an early lead as she looked to get back on terms, but Barthel broke back twice to level things up from 5-2 down.

Even a fall in the dirt could not disrupt the World No.82 for too long; she quickly got back to her feet to play a swift backhand as Giorgi failed to capitalize on her distress, then sent a forehand back down the court to win the point.

The Italian attempted to keep the pressure on in the second-set tiebreak, but could not convert any of the three set points she secured. Then she crumbled at the first match point she faced, slashing a forehand long and sending Barthel sailing into the semifinals.
