ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - No.2 seed Kiki Bertens is through to her second quarterfinal of the year after defeating Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure in exactly one hour at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy.
Bertens dominated on serve today, striking an impressive 13 aces across both sets and winning 90% of her first serve points en route to a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Her victory completes the St. Petersburg quarterfinals line up, and Bertens will take on Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round. Pavlyuchenkova is fresh off of an upset of No.6 seed Jelena Ostapenko, who she defeated 6-4, 6-4 earlier in the day.
Bertens got off to a strong start against lefty qualifier Bonaventure on Sibur Arena, firing five aces across her first two service games.
In fact, Bertens was nearly untouchable on serve for most of the opening set: during the opening eight games of the match, she won every service game to love or to 15 - with at least one ace in each game - and dropped a combined two points on serve.
As a result, the pressure to find an inroad was firmly on Bonaventure’s shoulders, but it was Bertens who finally broke through at 5-3, to serve for the set.
That’s when Bertens dropped the first points behind her first serve (she had been 100% up until 5-3), and Bonaventure took advantage of the sudden opportunity to build up a 0-40 lead. Bertens hit back to back aces to try and wiggle out of trouble, but she was still broken.
But there was no need to panic for Bertens, who calmly broke serve once more to take the first set with confidence.
While the first set was all about the Bertens’ serve, the second saw the Dutch player dial up the intensity on the return. She kept Bonaventure on the back foot, and was rewarded early on by a break to start the set with a 3-0 lead.
She pushed Bonaventure to break points in almost all of the Belgian’s service games, looking firmly in control of the match as she raced toward the finish line. After exactly one hour on court, Bertens scored a second break to put an end to the contest and book her spot into the St. Petersburg quarterfinals.
