PARIS, France – Former Roland Garros champion Ana Ivanovic is back in the French capital as the tournament honored her with a retirement ceremony on Thursday.
In between her busy schedule, Ivanovic sat down with WTA Insider’s Courtney Nguyen for a quick chat on Facebook Live. Here are some of the best moments from the pair’s interview!
On watching that highlight reel of her 2008 Roland Garros victory during her ceremony:
“I was mentally preparing myself for that moment, not to cry, to be strong. And then I saw the video and I was like, sniffing and holding back my tears! It brought back a lot of nice memories.”
The players she’s been watching in 2017:
“It’s great to see Jelena Ostapenko doing well today because it brings back memories from when I did that at the age of 19 and 20.
“And it’s great to see Svitolina do well. Actually, my old sparring partner Andrew Bettles is working with her so it’s nice to see that. We keep in touch sometimes and I’ll send messages of congratulations.”
On how she stays fit in the freezing cold Chicago:
“On one particular run, it wasn’t good weather, it was a bit windy and rainy. But I said, you know what? I’m going to tough it out and just go run outside.
“I had my beanie on, my scarf, a whole proper outfit – and it just was so brutal. But all the other people kept running and biking! I thought, if they can do it then I can do it! That lasted for about 20 minutes. And then I gave up.”
How she scratches her competitive itch:
“Don’t worry, there’s plenty of competition! When you do sports, when you play cards – whenever I beat someone at something, whatever it is, there’s a lot of pride involved. So that’s absolutely fine. I get my dose of competition!”
