Dominika Cibulkova has a 5-3 lead in her head-to-head against Lucie Safarova, and is also ahead 2-1 on grass (the Slovak won in the first round of Wimbledon 2010 and the first round of Eastbourne 2015; Safarova took their third-round meeting at Wimbledon 2014). However, the Czech has won their only encounter in 2017, a 7-6(1), 6-1 victory in the fourth round of Miami.
Marketa Vondrousova has come through qualifying for the sixth time this year. Her three victories here take her record in qualies (both ITF and WTA) to 18-0 in 2017.
Coco Vandeweghe's first round against Christina McHale is a rematch from last year's Aegon Classic, when Vandeweghe won their second-round encounter 6-3, 7-6(2). Overall, their head-to-head is locked at 2-2.
Donna Vekic's second career title last week in Nottingham also meant that the Croat has reached one final in five of the six years she has played on the WTA Tour so far. She has beaten Alison Riske, her opponent today, in both of their meetings to date, including a 6-3, 7-6(2) win in the first round of Indian Wells this year.
Lucky Loser Tereza Smitkova is playing her first WTA Tour main draw since qualifying for Luxembourg last October. The Czech, who takes on Petra Kvitova in the first round today, has previous form on grass: in her first ever WTA-level tournament on the surface, she qualified and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2014.
