Irina-Camelia Begu is the only previous finalist still in the field. The home player won the tournament in 2017.

She has a 1-1 career head-to-head record against Laura Siegemund, winning their only previous meeting on clay in Charleston but losing their most recent clash, in Indian Wells 2016.

Siegemund lost in the quarters her last year, going down in three sets to Petra Martic.

No.2 seed Viktoria Kuzmova lost her only previous match against Elena Rybakina on Istanbul’s hard courts last year.

Kristyna Pliskova is chasing her second WTA Tour semifinal of the year. She reached the final four of Lugano in April before losing to Iga Swiatek.

Barbora Krejcikova has won her last 12 of her last 13 singles matches on clay courts, including ITF events in Stare Splavy and Wiesbaden.

Patricia Maria Tig and Martina Di Giuseppe are bidding to be the first qualifiers to reach the semifinals of this event. 

This is the first time there have been two qualifiers in the quarterfinals.
