Twenty-four hours on from the exit of No.2 seed Zheng Saisai, Chang sprung another surprise by brushing aside former World No.23 Hsieh Su-Wei, 6-3, 6-3, in little over an hour.

"I think Hsieh Su-Wei is a very strong opponent, so I had to be very careful not to let my level drop at any point," Chang said. "But I know I can still play better. I won this game today, I'm pretty happy, and I hope to take the momentum into the next match."

Chang's reward is a meeting with Zhang Kai-Lin, who defeated Ekaterina Bychkova, 6-3, 6-3. Also advancing in the bottom half of the draw was No.7 seed Wang Yafan, a 6-1, 6-1 winner over qualifier Kyoka Okamura.

Meanwhile, in the top half, there were similarly comfortable victories for Wang Qiang and Duan Ying-Ying. No.3 seed Wang needed just 79 minutes to see off Jang Su Jeong, 6-3, 6-2, while No.5 seed Duan was an even more impressive 6-2, 6-1 winner over Alison Bai.

The first round draws to a close on Wednesday, with former World No.1 and top seed Jelena Jankovic getting her title challenge underway against Riko Sawayanagi.
