ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Reigning BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global champion Dominika Cibulkova was ruthless in her opening round match at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, dismissing lucky loser Donna Vekic, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals.

Cibulkova was playing her first tournament since reaching the third round of the Australian Open, and was eager to kickstart her season after ending 2016 with a Top 5 finish in Singapore.

Meanwhile, Vekic made the most of her unexpected entry in the main draw by playing one of her best matches in months to knock out Jelena Ostapenko in the first round.

Still, Cibulkova proved a step too far for the young Croat, as the No.2 seed maintained a 68% win percentage behind her first serve and broke serve five times to seal the victory in one hour and 13 minutes.

Up next for Cibulkova is No.5 seed Elena Vesnina, who emerged victorious from a three-set tussle with Alizé Cornet to book a rematch of their Wimbledon quarterfinal, which the Russian won, 6-1, 6-1.
