MATCH POINTS

Simona Halep has reached the final in Cincinnati in three of the last four years but has never managed to lift the title.

The Romanian has never faced Ekaterina Alexandrova previously.

Maria Sharapova is one of three former champions in action on Wednesday: Karolina Pliskova and (2016) and Victoria Azarenka (2013) have also won silverware here.

The Russian has a 1-1 career head-to-head record against WTA World No.2 Ashleigh Barty. Both matches have been over three sets, Sharapova prevailing in Rome in 2018 before the Australian hit back at her home Grand Slam earlier this year.

Another match with a history of going the distance is Yulia Putintseva and Sloane Stephens. All of their three previous encounters have gone all the way – with the lower-ranked player winning on each occasion. As such, Putintseva has a 2-1 edge in the head-to-head, winning 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-0 in Sydney in January.

Naomi Osaka has played Cincinnati only once before. She lost in last year’s first round to Maria Sakkari.

The Japanese has a perfect 3-0 record against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, losing only five games in their last two matches combined, including a double bagel en route to the US Open title of 2018.

Madison Keys has a dominant record against Daria Kasatkina. The American has only once lost a set to the Russian in their four meetings, all of which have been on hard courts, including a 6-2, 6-1 success in Cincinnati 2017.

Although Elina Svitolina has a 2-1 record against Elise Mertens, the Belgian won the pair’s most important meeting: a quarterfinal clash in the 2018 Australian Open.
