LUXEMBOURG - Romania's No.3 player Monica Niculescu earned her first WTA title of the year on Saturday when she defeated top seed Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-0 at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open.

But what's even more exciting is that the Romanian player snatched the title on her third attempt. Moni made consecutive appearances back in 2011 and 2012, but on both occasions she failed to secure the title.

However, four years later, this time around was something special. The 29-year-old not only defeated Kvitova after an hour and eight-minute face-off, she did it on her mom's birthday. Her mother, Cristiana Silvia Niculescu, wasn't able to see the match in person, but we can almost guarantee she watched her daughter deliver the most special birthday gift ever!

In her enthusiastic post-match speech, Niculescu made sure to give a handful of shout-outs: from her coach to the referees, but made sure to end with a special message for her mom.

"Today is my mom's birthday. I'm so happy I won this title," she said with the biggest smile. "She's not here, but happy birthday mom!"
