MATCH POINTS

Halep is bidding to become the fourth two-time champion in Doha following Anastasia Myskina (2003-04), Maria Sharapova (2005, 2008) and Victoria Azarenka (2012-13).

The Romanian would secure her 200th career main draw win by lifting the title, and already assured a return to World No.2 after defeating Lesia Tsurenko in the second round.

Mertens is through to her first final in Doha in her second appearance, having lost in the second round on her debut last year against Julia Goerges.

The Belgian No.1, the lone competitor from her country in the draw this week, looks to be the first Belgian to win the title in Doha since Justine Henin raised the trophy in 2007.

They would be one of three countries to have more than one champion since the event began in 2001 (Russia, Czech Republic).

Mertens is also bidding to be the first unseeded champion in Doha since Lucie Safarova won the title in 2015.
