The Australian Open 2016 is about to get underway, and prominent in the draw will undoubtedly be former World No.1 and 22-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.

Williams won her 22nd major title at last year's Wimbledon Championships, tying Stefanie Graf for the Open Era record. A seventh victory Down Under would help Williams break the tie in what would be the latest milestone in an already historic career.

Before the fortnight begins, espnW compiled an oral history on the American, from her humble beginnings in Compton, California, to her first Grand Slam appearance in 1998 - fittingly, in Melbourne - to both Serena Slams completed in 2003 and 2015.
