Mihaela Buzarnescu meets Maria Sakkari for the first time.

Maria Sakkari is competing in her first WTA final, having won a semifinal at the third attempt on Saturday.

Mihaela Buzarnescu competes in her third final of 2018, following previous defeats in Hobart and Prague.

Mihaela Buzarnescu won her 34th tour-level match of the year on Saturday. Prior to this season, her total stood at three.

No Romanian or Greek has previously made the final at this event.

Three of the last five San José finals have gone to five sets.

Only once since 2003 has a player come from behind to win the final, Dominika Cibulkova recovering from a set down to take the honors against Agnieszka Radwanska in 2013.

Mihaela Buzarnescu has been taken the distance in three of her four matches en route to this year's final, while Maria Sakkari enjoyed three straight-set victories before her semifinal against Danielle Collins. The last player to win the title here without dropping a set remains Serena Williams, back in 2012.

Svetlana Kuznetsova takes part in her first final of 2018 on Sunday. The Russian has won 17 of her 40 previous singles finals.

Donna Vekic takes part in her first final of 2018 on Sunday. The Croat has won two of her five previous singles finals.

Three of the past seven winners of the Citi Open have been Russian - including Svetlana Kuznetsova herself in 2014.

No Croat has previously played in the final of this event.

Just two of the last seven finals have gone to seven sets - both involving a Russian winner. Ekaterina Makarova was taken the distance by Julia Goerges last year, three years after compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova was pushed by Kurumi Nara.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is yet to drop a set at the Citi Open this week, while Donna Vekic was taken the distance once, by Fanny Stollar in the second round.

Donna Vekic and Svetlana Kuznetsova are level at a win apiece in previous meetings - the Croat winning in Miami in 2014 before losing out in Tianjin two years later.
