Samantha Stosur has withdrawn from this month's US Open, after failing to recover from her wrist injury.

The Australian won her only Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in 2011, shocking Serena Williams in the final, but will be unable to take part in New York this year.

Stosur, 33, has not played since the fourth round of the French Open in June, when she lost to eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko. The World No.43 had had hoped to recover in time but has now admitted defeat, and will be replaced by Germany's Annika Beck in the main draw..

Stosur's 6-2, 6-3 victory over Serena in 2011 followed her only other Slam singles final, losing i the French Open at Roland Garros to the Italian, Francesca Schiavone. She also made the women's doubles final twice at Flushing Meadows, winning alongside home favourite Lisa Raymond in 2005 before losing with the same partner three years later.

Her absence brings to an end 13 successive appearances at the US Open, dating back to 2004. Quarterfinals in 2010 and 2012 bookend her 2011 success.
