STRASBOURG, France - Daria Gavrilova progressed to the semifinals of the Internationaux de Strasbourg on Thursday, beating compatriot Ashleigh Barty in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.

The 23-year-old seventh seed, who had already made the last eight at both the Internazionali BNL d'Italia and Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem this month, took the first with an early break before being pegged back by her compatriot in a second set tiebreak.

She had already been taken to three sets in the second round by Russian qualifier Elizaveta Kulichkova and was again made to work for victory.

Barty, already safely qualified for the doubles final here alongside Casey Dellacqua and whom took time out of the game to represent Brisbane in cricket's Big Bash League in 2015, had opportunities in the third set but was eventually beaten by another tiebreak.

Her hopes of adding to her maiden WTA tour title, secured at the Malaysian Open in March, will have to be put on hold.
