NÜRNBERG, Germany – No.6 seed Julia Goerges made a strong start on home soil at the Nürnberger Versicherungs Cup, knocking out Nao Hibino in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.

“I think overall it was a very solid match from my side,” Goerges told wtatennis.com afterwards. “It always takes a little time to adjust and get ready, but I’m very pleased to be in the second round.

“I don’t think there is ever any easy match – even in two sets – because there is always a lot of things going on behind that people can’t see. But in general I just need time to adjust, and then I was able to finish strong in the second set.”

Also in action, France’s Oceane Dodin overcame a titanic three-set battle against the No.3 seed Zhang Shuai to reach the second round.

Dodin recovered from dropping the first set in a close battle – the Frenchwoman fought off six set points and even held one of her own during the lengthy tiebreaker. She trailed by a break in the second, but came all the way back to advance 6-7(11), 6-3, 6-4 after two hours on court.

“It was very difficult mentally, because I lost that tiebreak like 13-11 or something like that,” Dodin told wtatennis.com afterwards. “It was my first time being down like this, and it was hard too because I had one set point.

“After I just tried to be more aggressive and focus on my serve – I think this was the key to the match. It was very difficult because she is playing very well, but I’m just very happy to be in the second round here.”

Joining them in round two, Yanina Wickmayer also overcame a marathon battle against Swiss qualifier Amra Sadikovic, 7-6(15), 6-7(4), 6-2.
