SINGAPORE - WTA Rising Star Simona Halep, who has had an absolute breakthrough year - reaching her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros and going all the way to No.2 on the WTA Rankings - has become the third player to qualify for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.

Halep recorded her three best Grand Slam performances this year - quarterfinals at the Australian Open, finals at the French Open and semis of Wimbledon - and she's also captured her seventh and eighth WTA titles at Doha and Bucharest. Having begun the year ranked No.11, she has shot all the way up to No.2, passing former No.7 Irina Spirlea to become Romania's highest-ranked player ever.

And now Halep will become just the third Romanian ever to compete at the WTA Finals, after the only other Romanians ever to reach the Top 10, Virginia Ruzici (who is now her manager) and Spirlea.

"It's always been a dream of mine to compete in the WTA Finals," Halep said. "I've had great success this year, and I'm looking forward to competing against the best players in the world in Singapore."

"Simona Halep's ascent over the last couple of years has been incredible, and she has become one of the elite players in the game," WTA Chairman & CEO Stacey Allaster said. "As the countdown to Singapore continues, the Asian swing is an exciting time on the Road To Singapore as the picture becomes more clear about who will be competing on the ultimate stage for women's tennis."

Halep is the third player to qualify this year, after Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
