MATCH POINTS

The final between Sofia Kenin and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova is the third title match between unseeded players in the past 10 years in Hobart. In 2009, Petra Kvitova defeated Iveta Benesova 7-5, 6-1 for her maiden title, and in 2015 Heather Watson beat qualifier Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-4 for the trophy.

Kenin was the victor in her only previous encounter with Schmiedlova, 7-6(5), 6-4 in New Haven qualifying last year.

Kenin will be competing in her first ever WTA Tour final, and is the second maiden finalist in as many weeks in 2019 following Bianca Andreescu, runner-up last week in Auckland. Schmiedlova will be playing her fifth final and bidding for her fourth title; overall, the Slovak has a 3-1 record in finals, and has won her past three in straight sets over Camila Giorgi (Katowice 2015), Sara Errani (Bucharest 2015) and Lara Arruabarrena (Bogota 2018).

Schmiedlova reached a career high of World No.26 at the end of 2015, but slumped out of the Top 200 over the next two years, sinking to No.273 in January 2017. This time last year, the 24-year-old was ranked No.137, but is guaranteed to return to the Top 60 for the first time since August 2016 with her run this week. Kenin is also guaranteed to beat her current career high placement of No.48 on Monday.

In doubles, Hao-Ching and Latisha Chan have reached their second final in as many weeks, following their Brisbane runner-up showing last week. The sisters are going for their first title together since Hong Kong 2017.
