STANFORD, CA, USA - Two-time Wimbledon champion and former World No.2 Petra Kvitova has been granted a main draw wildcard into the 2017 Bank of the West Classic.
Kvitova has made a triumphant return to the WTA this year following surgery to repair damage to her left hand suffered during a home invasion in December of 2016. Earlier this year she captured the singles title at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham prior to Wimbledon marking her 20th career WTA singles title.
This will mark Kvitova’s first visit to the Bank of the West Classic.
The addition of Kvitova gives the Bank of the West Classic a Grand Slam feel with five players having won major singles titles including five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova, two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka, reigning Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza, and past French Open champion Francesca Schiavone. The field also boast several young American stars including Madison Keys, Bay Area native CiCi Bellis, CoCo Vandeweghe and currently Wimbledon Junior Champion Claire Liu.
The Bank of the West Classic, a Premier WTA event, features a 28-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw. The event is owned and operated by IMG and serves as the opening women's event of the US Open Series.
